    S. L. GRIFFITH CLIPPING FROM NEW YORK TRIBUNE

    ​Silas L. Griffith, of Danby, Vermont, whose death at National City, California, on Tuesday, was announced in The Tribune yesterday, was one of the largest landowners and wealthiest men in Vermont, if not in New England. He took an active part in the politics of his state, having been a member of its Senate and frequently mentioned as a possible Republican candidate for Governor.

    MRS. EMILY A. HADWEN DIES AT HOME IN SOUTH WALLINGFORD

    ​Mrs. Emily A. Hadwen, widow of George A. Hadwen, died at her home in South Wallingford Saturday morning. She is survived by one son, George Edward Hadwen of South Wallingford, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Maxham of Rutland and Mrs. A. W. Needham of South Wallingford, two sisters, Mrs. Ellen J. Paul of Middletown Springs and Mrs. Cornelia Lewis of Wells and one brother, Marcellus Francis of Wells. Owing to sickness in the family, private funeral services will be held at her late home this afternoon at 2 o’clock. Burial in Scottsville cemetery.

    S. L. GRIFFITH CONTRACT WITH THE NEW HOME SEWING MACHINE CO.

    S. L. Griffith has closed a contract with the New Home Sewing Machine Co., of Orange and others in Massachusetts to furnish them 2,800,000 feet of lumber. The New Home Sewing Machine contract was for 2,000,000 feet. Mr. Griffith leaves for Iowa Thursday where he will purchase two or three carloads of horses to use in his lumber business the coming winter. These with what he and the company, Griffith & McIntyre now have, will give them about 200 horses which they expect to work in their lumber business the coming season.

    MRS. TIEL AT REST

    Mrs. Mary H. Tiel died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Katie T. Griffith, last Saturday morning, after an illness of several months, aged 80 years. She is survived by a son, William Tiel, of Philadelphia, and two daughters, Mrs. Griffith and Miss Nellie Tiel. She was much respected among the people with whom she became acquainted while residing with her daughter here, as well as in her Philadelphia home.

    MR. GRIFFITH’S FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

    It is expected that the remains, of Mr. S. L. Griffith, accompanied by Mrs. Griffith and Mr. W. H. Griffith, will arrive in Danby on the 7.05 train tonight. The body was embalmed and encased in a metallic casket, and services were held in San Diego, Cal., at 2.30 o’clock last Friday afternoon, with Rev. Mr. Crabtree of San Diego, Rev. Mr. Abbott of Chulavista, and Rev. Mr. Kommers of National City officiating. Mrs. Griffith and Mr. W. H. Griffith started with the remains on their long journey last Monday, and have thus been traveling five consecutive days.

    MR. GRIFFITH’S BEQUESTS

    Only the Provisions of the Will Which Relate to Public Affairs Made Known as Yet.

    The public bequests of the late Silas L. Griffith were promulgated through the daily papers the early part of this week, but all efforts to learn anything relative to the private benefactions of the will have only met with discouragement from the executors.
